Caterers combat food-borne diseases

The Kouga Municipality held a one-day food safety and hygiene workshop for caterers in the area at the Humansdorp Country Club on Thursday.

Kouga Social Services Portfolio Councillor Daniel Benson said the workshop was held in order to promote food safety and to highlight that most food-borne diseases could be prevented with proper food handling and preparation.

“Unsafe food has been a human health problem since history was first recorded and many food safety problems encountered today are not new. The occurrence of food-borne disease remains a significant health issue in both developed and developing countries,” he said.

“Every day people all over the world get sick and die as a result of diarrheal diseases and most of these cases can be attributed to contaminated food or water. We therefore saw it fit that we should equip our caterers with proper knowledge to avoid calamities,” said Benson.

 The workshop was divided into two sections which are Food Safety and Hygiene.

The first section focused on Five Keys to Safer Food which are: Keeping Clean, Separating Raw and Cooked Food, Cooking Thoroughly, Keeping Food at a Safe Temperature and Using Safe Water & Raw Materials.

The second part focused on Personal and Environmental Hygiene, Responsibilities of Food Handlers and compliance with the R962 Regulation that governs the General Hygiene Requirements for Food Premises and the Transport of Food.
