A popular Eastern Cape holiday town has won the 2018 Kwêla Town of the Year competiton.

Jeffreys Bay was announced the winner of the competition on Sunday evening.

The town was one of nine finalists from South Africa and Namibia. The other finalists were Montagu in the Western Cape, Parys in the Free State, Fochville in Gauteng, Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga, Modimolle in Limpopo, St Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal and Mariental in Namibia.

Kouga Mayor Horatio Hendricks said that while Jeffreys Bay was known for having the best waves in the world, it was the town's people that secured it the title.

"This win belongs to the people of Jeffreys Bay.

"We have the best waves in the world, but it wasn't about what we have - it's about the people who are warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere they create here.

"People from all walks of life took hands to make this happen.

"It shows that, as a town and the broader Kouga community, we are better together than we are apart," he said.

He said the victory was a bittersweet moment as the campaign was started by his predecessor, Elza van Lingen.

Van Lingen, who was elected as Mayor in August 2016, died of cancer in April, only two weeks after she participated in the making of an insert on Jeffreys Bay for the Kwêla competition.

Hendricks sais he believed she would be very "chuffed" with the victory.

"It was her dream that Kouga would be the best municipality in South Africa. This is a big step in the right direction and I am certain she is smiling down from heaven on us."

The winning town receives R1-million of free marketing on Kyknet and the Kwêla team is expected back in Jeffreys Bay soon for the filming of an advertisement of the town.

Kwêla will also host a "makietie" for the town in September. Preparations, including the finalisatin of the date, kicks off this week.
