Nine unemployed Tourism graduates from Kouga have been given an opportunity to ply their trade through the Tourism Buddies Programme, conducted by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA).

Eldrich Ruiters from Humansdorp, Jeffreys Bay’s Amanda Gqotoho, Cecile Jones, Asavela Gcelu, Noluthando Bam, Masiluve Mlamla, Liesal Harmse and Hankey’s Vuyisanani Nkwenkwezi and Deon Wagosa were selected by the agency to be Kouga’s Tourism Buddies along Dolphin Beach at Jeffreys Bay during holiday seasons.

The nine were selected from the database of Kouga’s unemployed graduates, which is kept at the Local Economic Development (LED) section of the municipality.

The Tourism Buddies is a provincial programme which focuses on the busiest tourism destinations. Jeffreys Bay’s Dolphin Beach was the chosen spot for Kouga.

The group started working during the Easter weekend and will be back again for the September holiday and the longer festive season in December.

The Buddies will be in identifiable clothing and their services will include providing information about tourism offerings in the area and giving out safety and security tips to tourists. They will also be equipped with brochures, leaflets and maps about tourism spots in the area.

Tourism and Creative Industries Portfolio Councillor Virginia Camealio-Benjamin said the aim of the initiative was to bring information to where people spend most of their vacation time - along the beaches.

“This work complements our Tourism Info Offices as not everyone finds time to visit the facilities, with some preferring a more casual manner of sourcing information than approaching offices.

“There is so much to explore in terms of tourism in our area and we welcome any measures that will spread the message on a mass scale,” said Camealio-Benjamin.

The Tourism Buddies will also undergo basic training on first aid and safety and security.

To find out how to register as an unemployed graduate on Kouga’s database, one may call 042 200 2219 or email ccammons@kouga.gov.za. Registration does not guarantee employment but is for the purposes of referral should any institution require a certain skills group or individual.
