Thirty-two single moms and their children will have food and toiletries for the next month thanks to the Special Programmes Unit in the Office of Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks.

The unit joined hands with the Ladies Lighthouse at Jeffreys Bay last week to reach out to single mothers as part of Kouga Municipality's Women's Month programme.

Hendricks commended co-founder Carla Smit and the volunteers who have been driving the Ladies Lighthouse, a non-profit organisation that supports single mothers struggling to survive.

"Many of these mothers and children have escaped from abusive homes and face severe financial challenges," he said.

"The Ladies Lighthouse has been amazing in their support of them, assisting them with food, toiletries, clothing and housing.

"The organisation depends on volunteers and donations to do this important work. It is a true labour of love and I am grateful that we could make this contribution."

The Ladies Lighthouse recently opened a charity shop next to Midas in Prospect Street, Jeffreys Bay, to help raise funds for their work.

The shop is open from 9am to 4pm on Mondays to Fridays and from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.

Donations of food for the women and their children or items to sell in the shop are also welcome. Further information about the organisation is available from Carla Smit on 079 399 8565 or visit their Facebook page.
