Blue Flag for Kouga beach
Kouga Municipality has set its sights on obtaining Blue Flag status for Cape St Francis by 2017.
The Cape St Francis Beach was one of 30 beaches in South Africa to be awarded pilot status at the 2015/2016 Blue Flag launch at Hermanus recently.
Dolphin Beach at Jeffreys Bay was once again awarded full Blue Flag status for the period November 2015 to April 2016.
Kouga Executive Mayor Daphne Kettledas said that the municipality would focus on developing Cape St Francis in line with Blue Flag requirements over the next two years.
"The work will mainly involve new ablution facilities closer to the bathing area, a first-aid room and lifeguard hut. We would also like to build a boardwalk to make it easier to access the beach," she said.
The work will be done in partnership with the Department of Environmental Affairs, whose Coast Care programme has been instrumental in helping Kouga retain Blue Flag status for Dolphin Beach.
