Festive clampdown on road offenders

16 December 2017

Road safety will be one of the priorities this festive season as the municipality clamps down on lawlessness on Kouga’s public roads.

Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said the municipality’s traffic department will hold joint operations with police and the provincial traffic officers.

“We will have a zero-tolerance approach towards drinking and driving, driving without a licence and overloading,” she said.

The Mayor said the men in blue will also be on the look-out for unroadworthy vehicles, warrants for previous offences and unpaid fines.

“We have also hired five additional traffic officers to help with point duties and increased visibility, especially around the busy towns,” said Van Lingen.

The Mayor also urged pedestrians to be more careful on the roads by avoiding walking on or crossing freeways, walking in dark clothing at night where they might not be seen by motorists and to avoid walking on the roads when under the influence of alcohol.

“Pedestrians account for the biggest number of road fatalities in our country and these occur mainly due to not observing the precautions I have mentioned.

“One life lost is one life too many and we will work extra hard to ensure road safety in Kouga,” she said.
