Fire disaster declaration extended by a month

11 September 2017

The Kouga Council has extended the local disaster declaration it made following the devastating fires at Longmore and Thornhill in June 2017 by a month.

Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said the extension was approved by the Council on Friday.

“The initial declaration was made on 12 June and was valid for three months up to 12 September. The new resolution extends this period to 13 October,” she said.

Mayor Van Lingen said the extension is necessary because the Sarah Baartman District Municipality had failed to table the disaster declaration to its Mayoral Committee or Council, as required.

“There are possible sources of disaster funding for which we can apply, but we need the declaration to be tabled to the District Council in order to qualify,” she said.

“We are deeply disappointed with the District Council for failing to fulfil its duty and have asked our District Council representatives to apply pressure on the District for the item to be tabled.”
