Hankey sport scores from Ward Development Fund

20 November 2020

Two spectator stands at the Hankey sports ground have been repaired and refurbished.

The repairs were funded through the Ward Development Fund at a total cost of R28 500.

“There is no better way to unite a community and keep its youth out of trouble than sport,” said Ward 9 Councillor, Sibongile Jujwana.

He said sport played an important role in Ward 9 and the surrounding wards affiliated with clubs based in Hankey.

A total of nine football clubs are active in Ward 9, including a team of “golden oldies”, the Hankey Masters Football Club, two rugby teams and four netball teams, with the majority of players born, bred and seasoned in the area.

“The Hankey Sports Ground has become a second home to many sport-loving youth. Some are active participants while others opt to be sideline coaches and aspiring referees,” Jujwana said.

Kouga Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Daniel Benson, said the objectives of the Ward Development Fund included promoting community relationships and development initiatives, as well as supporting ward-based organisations to enhance the potential within wards.

“It, therefore, becomes important to support a plea from a community with so much potential and love for sport”, he said.

Councillor Jujwana is an active part of sport development in Hankey. He plays for the Hankey Masters Football Club but is also a coach and mentor to the boys and girls of Hankey.
