KwaNomzamo Community Hall re-opened

11 November 2020

The KwaNomzamo Community Hall has been given a second chance to serve the communities of Wards 6, 12 and 15 in Humansdorp.

On Sunday, 8 November 2020, the hall was officially re-opened and handed back to the community by Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, and Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Daniel Benson.

Almost R1,5 million worth of repairs had been done to the structure and new furniture had been bought in order for it to be restored to a community facility.

The hall, including the office of a club for the elderly, was torched and badly damaged on 6 March 2018, allegedly by a group of service delivery protestors.

The fire caused sever structural damage to the ceiling, walls, stage and floor, which meant that it could no longer be used by the community. All the windows had also been broken.

Hendricks said that the re-opening of the KwaNomzamo Hall was critical, as it served the elderly and was also used as a venue for other important social and religious gatherings.

The refurbishment of the hall was a year-long team effort by Community Services officials, led by Parks and Public Amenities manager Frank Tamboer. Local SMMEs and businesses within the Kouga area assisted in fencing, tilling and repainting the hall.

The Mayor urged residents not to resort to damaging state property when they were dissatisfied but to engage with the municipality and community leaders so that solutions can be tabled.
