Two new fire trucks have been delivered to Kouga Municipality to help keep communities safe.

Kouga Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks said the vehicles had been procured at a cost of more than R4 million.

"The first new vehicle is a 2,5 tonne 4x4 single cab, similar to the one added to Kouga's fleet two years ago," he said.

"These are smaller vehicles, ideally suited to off-road operations and fighting fires in informal settlements."

He said the second vehicle was a 6 000l all-terrain 4x4 water tanker.

"This vehicle can also operate on rough terrain and has a foam concrete booster tank, which makes it a valuable asset for attending to burning vehicles or flammable substance fires."

Hendricks thanked the Sarah Baartman District Municipality for contributing R1,47-million to the procurement of the vehicles.

He said the delivery of the vehicles had originally been scheduled for earlier this year but that the assembly of the trucks had been delayed due to the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown.

"We are pleased that the new trucks have arrived, as it will will strengthen the capacity of our Fire Department to keep Kouga safe as we enter the warm and dry summer months."
