The Centerton Sports Field in Hankey underwent a R1 million upgrade, with the revamped facility officially opened on 16 October 2024.
The transformation of this crucial community facility has been made possible through a successful partnership between Kouga Municipality and the Amandla Omoya Trust, marking a significant investment in the region’s socio-economic development.
Funded by a R1 million contribution from the Amandla Omoya Trust, the project aligns with the Trust's mission to uplift communities within a 50km radius of the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm. Following community engagement in 2022, where residents highlighted the need for an improved sports field, the Trust partnered with the municipality, which contributed essential equipment and expertise to bring the project to fruition.
The upgrade encompassed the refurbishment of the existing sports field, which is now equipped for soccer, cricket, and netball, including the installation of a cricket training net. Additionally, the locker rooms have been renovated.
Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, expressed his excitement at the completion of the project, saying: “The upgraded sport field is a space where dreams are born, where young athletes can develop their talents, and where the community can come together.
“Sport has the power to unite and uplift communities. With this upgrade, our youth can compete with dignity and pride, and I have no doubt that this field will inspire the next generation of champions.
“We are proud to have partnered with the Amandla Omoya Trust to deliver this facility that will benefit generations to come.”
