HUMANSDORP – With site handover completed last week, the much-anticipated upgraded of the Gill Marcus Water Treatment Works (WTW) in Humansdorp is set to commence on 22 July 2024.
This crucial project, valued at nearly R5 million and expected to span 2.5 months, will introduce advanced borehole water treatment capabilities to the facility.
This upgrade is essential due to the increasing demand for clean, drinkable water in the Gill Marcus area. This includes the residents of Kruisfontein, 7de Laan, Maak `n Las, Donkerhoek, Mooi Uitsig, Hopeville, Ext 391, Arcadia, Moerasrivier, Graslaagte, and Vaaldam, who are last in line to receive water from the current reticulation system.
Moreover, diversifying water sources is crucial for ensuring long-term sustainability.
The existing Gill Marcus WTW was initially designed with a capacity of approximately 1 Ml/day, exclusively for treating surface water,” said Kouga Deputy Executive Mayor, Timothy Jantjes. “The improved WTW will have the capability to manage a combined flow of surface and borehole water, reaching up to 3.5 Ml/day.”
Scope of work
According to Jantjes, the work for this project is extensive and covers various aspects of design, construction, and implementation.
The bulk of the work involves the replacement, provision, and installation of mechanical and electrical equipment on-site. This includes the installation of new treatment equipment, electrical and control equipment, instrumentation, and site lighting.
The project also includes the dismantling and removal of disused equipment, and the renovation and repair of buildings, as well as the construction of valve chambers and associated pipework.
Another key aspect is the installation of automated valves, pumps, level controls, and control systems in treatment works, pump stations and reservoirs Additionally, the old reservoir will be repaired and upgraded.
“This project is a significant step towards securing a sustainable water supply for our community,” said Jantjes. “By investing in modern technology and infrastructure, we are ensuring that our residents have access to clean, safe water for years to come.”
