Kouga – With the recent introduction of the contractor to the community, Kouga Municipality has commenced with the refurbishment of the Hankey Waste Water Treatment Works at a cost of close to R5 million.

This essential upgrade, which started on 22 July 2024, is set to enhance the facility's operations over a span of 2.5 months.

“The completion of this project is expected to bring about a marked improvement in the performance of the Hankey Waste Water Treatment Works, thereby providing long-term benefits to the residents and contributing to the overall environmental sustainability of the area,” said Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman.

Scope of work

The project encompasses several critical components, including the installation of a new open channel flowmeter at the inlet works.

Additionally, it involves the refurbishment of floating vertical shaft surface aerators, the supply and installation of analytical equipment for aerator control, and the refurbishment of clarifiers.

Moreover, the project will see the refurbishment of the RAS pump station and the supernatant return pump station. It also includes the design and installation of a new sodium hypochlorite dosing plant, the supply of a new low voltage MCC, and the implementation of a PLC system, as well as minor building works and fencing.

Bornman emphasised the significance of this project. “The refurbishment of the Hankey Waste Water Treatment Works is crucial to address the current operational deficiencies at the plant, ensuring that the effluent produced is Green Drop compliant.

“This compliance is vital for maintaining environmental standards and promoting the health and well-being of the local community.”
