Kouga - For the first time, Kouga Local Municipality’s Local Economic Development Office proudly participated in the highly esteemed Mzansi Young Farmers Indaba, which was recently held in Pretoria.
Recognised as Africa's leading event for young farmers, the annual Mzansi Young Farmers Indaba – hosted by Food for Mzansi, South Africa’s foremost agricultural news platform – brings together agripreneurs, industry experts, and key stakeholders to promote innovation, knowledge sharing, and collaboration within the agricultural sector.
Representing Kouga Local Municipality was Economic Development Officer Sinovuyo Shoco, who was honoured with the role of panelist at this illustrious event. Shoco shared her experience of agriculture and shed light on the pivotal role municipalities play in driving agricultural development. She emphasised how young farmers could access support through municipal agricultural initiatives and highlighted practices that have proven successful in Kouga.
Speaking on her experience, Shoco described the Indaba as an invaluable platform for networking with young farmers and industry experts who are at the forefront of ensuring food security for South Africa.
“My biggest takeaway is that no action is too small; we all have a role to play in achieving food security,” Shoco remarked.
She also reflected on the challenges that young farmers face, such as limited access to land and formal markets, as well as the impact of strict industry regulations on their economic participation. Despite these hurdles, Shoco expressed optimism, noting that events like the Indaba equip participants with the tools and knowledge to create meaningful change.
“It only takes one farmer to rewrite the narrative for previously disadvantaged farmers,” she added.
