NEW smart traffic cameras are doing the rounds across the Kouga region.

This after Kouga Municipality appointed TMT Traffic Management Technologies in May 2022 for a three-year period.

According to Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, portable Icam traffic cameras will be placed across the region on a rotational basis as per the instruction of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), as well as along the R102 and N2 – improving traffic policing in the interest of all road-user’s safety.

“The Icam will be used for speed monitoring,” he said. “The device also uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to sniff out stolen vehicles or vehicles with unpaid fines that are on the special interest screening list and alerts traffic officer of the approaching vehicle or at roadblocks.

“Apart from speed checking, it can also capture red light violations.

“The device, furthermore, interfaces with hand-held electronic ticket-issuing devices and allows for the issuing of a ticket by a traffic officer on site.”

To date, close to 22 000 fines valued at more than R14 million were issued.

Hendricks said the cameras are operated by trained traffic officers with operating certificates under supervision of a traffic supervisor.

“The service provider is responsible for the maintenance and calibration of the cameras,” he said.
