KOUGA – Kouga’s future environmental champions are being called to action as Kouga Local Municipality officially opens entries for the inaugural Kouga Schools Environmental Awards 2026 – an exciting initiative aimed at inspiring schools to take the lead in building a greener, more sustainable future.
All primary and high schools across the Kouga region are invited to participate in this dynamic programme, which not only celebrates environmental responsibility but also empowers learners to become active custodians of their communities.
Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, encouraged schools to seize the opportunity: “Our young people have the passion, creativity, and drive to make a real difference. Through initiatives like the Kouga Schools Environmental Awards, we are nurturing a generation that understands the importance of protecting our environment and taking ownership of a sustainable future.”
Schools entering the competition are required to develop and manage an environmental project, led by learners with the support of educators and school management. Projects can range from recycling initiatives and water-saving campaigns to greening efforts and environmental awareness programmes.
Participants must submit a Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) detailing their school profile, the motivation behind their project, activities undertaken, planning and management processes, as well as the overall impact and beneficiaries of the initiative.
Adding a creative and competitive edge, primary schools will present their environmental themes through a vibrant 15-minute performance – incorporating drama, dance, music, or art – while high schools will deliver a 20-minute PowerPoint presentation showcasing their research, analysis, and solutions, supported by relevant legislation and local examples.
Each school may enter a team of up to four learners per category. Entries will first be assessed based on the submitted PoE, after which the top two schools in each category will advance to present their projects on Awards Day. One winning school per category – primary and high school – will be crowned.
Mayor Bornman added: “The competition is a platform to showcase innovation, build environmental awareness, and celebrate the incredible work being done in our schools. I encourage every school in Kouga to get involved and be part of this meaningful journey.”
Beyond the competition, the awards promise lasting benefits – fostering environmental stewardship, encouraging teamwork, and strengthening community involvement, while contributing to a cleaner, greener Kouga.
