JEFFREYS BAY – Excitement filled Makukhanye Primary School in Jeffreys Bay on Friday, 23 October 2026, as Kouga Local Municipality and its partners joined hands to transform the school grounds into a greener and more welcoming environment for learners and educators.

The Environmental and Gardening Day focused on beautifying the school grounds and entrances, reviving the existing garden and encouraging a culture of environmental responsibility among learners. The Municipality’s Parks Team played an important role in the clean-up, demonstrating how teamwork and community partnerships can make a visible difference in shared spaces.

One of the highlights of the day was the launch of the school’s Environmental Club, which will empower learners to take an active role in protecting the environment and championing sustainable practices at school and in their community.

For newly appointed principal Sabatha Manyali, the occasion was an emotional one, reflecting both the excitement of a new beginning and gratitude for the support the school has received.

“I am happy and sad at the same time. We are so grateful that the municipality and other organisations are partnering with the school,” Manyali said.

The initiative highlights the value of partnerships between local government, community organisations and schools in creating positive and lasting change. By investing in environmental education and improving school surroundings, these partnerships help nurture a sense of pride, responsibility and ownership among young people.

Kouga Local Municipality extends its sincere appreciation to all the partners who contributed to making the day a success:

  • Greater Kromme Stewardship (GKS)
  • Sustainable Agri Holdings
  • Dorp van Dromme
  • Akumila Thrive NGO
  • Roaming Lions Adventures
  • Makukhanye Primary School.

Through collaborative initiatives such as this, the municipality continues to encourage environmental awareness and community participation, helping to lay the foundation for a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Kouga.
