Library Week celebrated

Librarians and performers from across the Cacadu district gathered in Humansdorp to mark this year’s National Library Week.

The annual event, celebrated countrywide since the year 2000, took place at the Humansdorp Main Library .

Portfolio councillor ThandekaMaseti said the event was significant for Kouga in many ways.

“We just celebrated the opening of a new mini library in an impoverished area of SewendeLaan. We believe we are making strides in ensuring that we empower our communities with knowledge,” she said.

She added that it was befitting for the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) to bring the event to Kouga.

DSRAC’s Manager of Cultural Affairs in Cacadu, Lennox Xalabile, said their aim was to encourage schools to make full use of the libraries.

“We know that many schools from previously disadvantaged areas do not have libraries. We have, however, prepared our facilities and library staff to accommodate the needs of learners,” he said.

The day was not short of entertainment as the nine municipalities brought with them arts and culture groups from their schools.

Kouga was represented by St Patrick’s Primary and Humansdorp Secondary.

The occasion also became a farewell party for Library and Information Services Assistant Directo,rMamkeliMbi, who has retired after 30 years of service.
