Mayor’s Cup rugby finals

RUGBY fans from across Kouga will throng to the Humansdorp Country Club this Saturday to watch two top teams from the region battle it out for glory in the 2014 Kouga Mayor’s Cup Rugby Tourney.

The United Barbarians from Patensie and Jeffreys Bay United will clash in the highly-anticipated finals of the annual rugby tournament.

Barbarians beat Humansdorp United in the semi-finals last week to earn their place in the final while J’Bay United got the better of the defending champions, Orlando Eagles from Thornhill, in their semi-final. 

The day’s programme will start at 14:15 with the Plate Finals between H’Dorp United and Orlando Eagles. The finals will kick off at 15:30, followed by the prize-giving.

Kouga Executive Mayor Booi Koerat said fans had been treated to quality rugby throughout the tourney.

“The aim of the Mayor’s Cup is to get communities actively involved in the development of rugby. As a Council, we have a responsibility to create platforms such as this tourney to encourage participation,” he said.

The Mayor said the tourney was an opportunity to identify and develop local talent.

“It also strengthens cooperation between local clubs and many use it as an opportunity to prepare for their upcoming Eastern Province fixtures.”

The Mayor’s Cup is organised by the Kouga Rugby Sub-Union and Kouga Municipality. The 2014 tourney kicked off in February and featured 11 top teams from Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp, St Francis Bay, Patensie, Hankey, Loerie and Thornhill.
