More land for houses at Jeffreys Bay

KOUGA Municipality is making good on its promise to residents of informal areas at Jeffreys Bay.

The Kouga Council on Friday (7 November 2014) approved an application for the subdivision of the farm Klein Zeekoe River next to Ocean View.

The Council resolved that the land, owned by a private developer, be subdivided into two portions of 421,47 ha and 79,56ha respectively.

The latter portion is to be bought by the Department of Human Settlements in order to build homes for housing applicants who cannot be accommodated in the 1 720 houses already approved for Jeffreys Bay .  

Kouga has the highest growth rate in the Eastern Cape, explained Kouga Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor Patrick Kota.

“The 1 500 houses that have been approved for Ocean View and 220 for Pellsrus are not enough to meet the demand for housing because of the influx of people to Jeffreys Bay,” he said.

“The municipality and department have been looking for land to build more houses. The subdivided land is ideal for this purpose.”

Council’s approval of the subdivision is the latest in a string of innovative moves to fast-track housing delivery to local communities.

Three projects, which will put in place the water and sanitation bulk infrastructure required for the planned houses, are also underway.

Two sewerage pump stations are being upgraded at a total cost of R20-million while a new water reservoir is being built at a cost of R26-million.

The upgrade of the Jeffreys Bay waste water treatment works has already been completed at a cost of R42-million.
