Opposition given control of MPAC

Kouga Council elected its first Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) in November.

 According to guidelines published by the Department of Cooperative Governance, the aim of MPACs is to “assist council to hold the executive and municipal entities to account, and to ensure the efficient and effective use of municipal resources”.

Following a renewed call by Kouga Executive Mayor Booi Koerat for closer cooperation between the ANC and DA, the ruling party showed that they were willing to walk the talk by recommending that the DA should have the majority on the Kouga committee.

Mayoral Committee member, Patrick Kota, went a step further by recommending that the DA should not only hold the majority on the committee but that DA councillor Chimpie Cawood should be elected as chairman.

 The final resolution was that the ANC should have four places and the DA five.

The MPAC consists of the following councillors: Chimpie Cawood (chairman), Ben Rheeder, Danny Benson, Henda Thiart, Nico Botha, Lulamile Ntshiza, Timothy Meleni, Bulelwa Koliti and Vuyelwa Matodlana.
