According to the figures, about R291 400 was spent during July 2008 and April 2009 as part of this fund.
Churches benefited to the tune of R21 450, with money going towards building costs, fundraising events, educational and care programmes, as well as special celebrations.
Schools and crèches received R78 216 in line with the mayor’s belief that a good education stands at the centre of upliftment. This money was used mainly for transport and educational trips.
A total of R46 100 was donated to sports teams and organisations during this period. Various codes benefited, including, soccer, rugby, netball and cricket, with the bulk of the money going towards transport costs, sport kits, junior sport development and helping with the organisation of tournaments.
At R145 634 worthy causes took the biggest chunk of the pie.
Beneficiaries included the Christelike Maatskaplike Raad (CMR), the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the St Francis Hospice (Kouga), Operation Hunger, the Institute for the Blind, the Loaves and Fishes Organisation, old-age homes, soup kitchens, gospel and youth projects, as well as health campaigns and the PZ Meyer TB Hospital.
Other beneficiaries included families who lost their homes due to disasters such as floods and fires.
