HANKEY - Residents of Hankey are set to benefit from a major upgrade to the Phillipsville Sports Field, with construction scheduled to commence in July 2026 and completion targeted for 30 December 2027.

The project, funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), represents an investment of R6 275 776.00 and forms part of Kouga Local Municipality’s ongoing commitment to investing in community facilities and creating spaces that encourage sports development, recreation and social upliftment.

The scope of work includes the refurbishment of existing facilities, electrification of the sports field, refurbishment of the floodlights, as well as the construction of new amenities to enhance the overall functionality and user experience of the facility.

Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said the upgrade would provide a much-needed boost for sporting activities in Hankey and surrounding communities.

“Sports facilities play an important role in building stronger communities by providing residents, especially young people, with safe spaces to participate in sport, develop their talents and engage in positive activities,” said Bornman.

“This investment of more than R6.2 million in the Phillipsville Sports Field demonstrates our commitment to improving public infrastructure and ensuring that communities across Kouga have access to facilities that support recreation, health and social development.”

Bornman added that the project would not only improve the physical appearance of the facility, but would also create a more suitable environment for sporting clubs, schools and community members who make use of the sports field.

“By upgrading the existing infrastructure, improving lighting and providing additional amenities, we are creating a facility that can better serve the Hankey community for years to come. These investments are essential in creating opportunities for residents and promoting active lifestyles,” he said.
