R25m road upgrade project underway in Humansdorp and Gamtoos Valley

KOUGA – Kouga Local Municipality is set to roll out a R25 million road upgrade project in the coming weeks, targeting critical road infrastructure in Humansdorp and the Gamtoos Valley, including Patensie, Hankey, Loerie and Thornhill.
The project is expected to be completed within six months and forms part of Phase 3 of Kouga’s R200 million road resealing programme, which was launched in January 2025 as part of the municipality’s ongoing investment in the maintenance and improvement of its road network.
The planned works will include localised stormwater repairs, electrical ducting, pothole repairs, crack sealing, asphalt overlays, slurry seals and new road markings.
Roads included in the programme were identified through a comprehensive assessment of the municipality’s road network. The prioritisation process considered factors such as road condition, traffic volumes and maintenance requirements to ensure that areas requiring the most urgent attention are addressed.
The project is expected to improve road safety, accessibility and driving conditions for residents, businesses and visitors, while contributing to the long-term sustainability of Kouga’s road infrastructure.
The municipality has urged motorists and residents to exercise caution and patience in areas where construction activities are underway and to adhere to temporary traffic measures and signage.
Kouga Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman said the project demonstrates the municipality’s continued commitment to investing in infrastructure that supports economic growth and improves the daily lives of residents.
"Well-maintained roads are essential for safe and efficient transport, economic development and service delivery. This investment will not only improve driving conditions but also ensure that our road network remains resilient and sustainable for years to come," said Bornman.
"Every kilometre of road that we upgrade is an investment in the future of Kouga. By maintaining and rehabilitating our infrastructure now, we reduce costly repairs in the future while creating safer roads for motorists, pedestrians and public transport users alike.”
He added that the municipality appreciated the patience and cooperation of residents and businesses while construction is underway.
