KOUGA - For Kouga Local Municipality Safety and Security Officer Eamon Oerson, completing the Two Oceans Marathon was never just about running 56 kilometres. It was about resilience, healing, and purpose.

A Journey Born from Loss and Love

Oerson’s decision to take on the ultramarathon in 2026 was deeply personal. Following the heartbreaking loss of his four-year-old daughter, he found himself searching for meaning and strength. Running, a sport he has always loved, became his path forward.

A serious knee injury in 2009 had forced him away from racing entirely. For a long time, the door to road-running seemed closed. But in 2026, something shifted. With determination in his heart and his daughter’s memory as his motivation, he made a powerful decision: he would return – and he would conquer the Two Oceans Marathon.

Triumph Over Pain

Crossing the finish line was nothing short of extraordinary. Despite lingering injury and countless setbacks, Oerson pushed through.

“The first half felt good,” he reflects, “but the second half was tough. There was pain, and my mind had to carry me through the last 16 kilometres.”

In those final kilometres, it became a battle not just of the body, but of the spirit. Every step demanded courage. Every breath required resolve. And yet, he refused to stop.

Running with Purpose

He made a promise to himself: he would finish the race, no matter what.

“I told myself there was a purpose for this race – and I was doing it for my daughter.”

That purpose carried him forward when his body wanted to give up. It reminded him of why he started. And ultimately, it carried him across the finish line in 05:11:46.

Strength on Duty

As a Safety and Security Officer, Oerson has found that running doesn’t just strengthen his body – it enhances his work.

The endurance and discipline he’s built through training have translated directly into his role. On two occasions, his fitness enabled him to successfully apprehend suspects – once at the Jeffreys Bay Caravan Park and again at Dolphin Beach.

Running has become more than a sport; it’s a tool that empowers him to serve his community more effectively.

Wellness, Focus, and Balance

In a high-pressure profession, stress is unavoidable. But for Oerson, running provides balance.

“It helps me stay calm, relaxed, and focused,” he says. “I enjoy my job and my career, and running keeps me grounded.”

His journey is a testament to the importance of physical wellness – not just for the body, but for the mind and spirit.

Inspiring a Community

His achievement has not gone unnoticed. His story has begun to ripple through the Kouga community, inspiring others to believe in what’s possible.

He recalls a moment when an elderly woman encouraged young boys to follow his example. Colleagues have also been inspired, with one even expressing interest in training alongside him next year.

His message is simple but powerful: greatness is within reach for anyone willing to try.

A Vision for Healthier Communities

Oerson believes municipalities can play a vital role in promoting wellness. He envisions fun runs, fitness camps, and inclusive sporting events for all ages – especially over weekends – to bring communities together and encourage healthier lifestyles.

Looking Ahead

While he initially planned to tackle the Comrades Marathon, he has wisely chosen to give himself more time to prepare, especially considering ongoing injury concerns. His goal is now to return stronger and take on both the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon in the future.

But his ambitions stretch beyond personal achievement. He dreams of studying sports management and becoming a professional coach – one who can guide and inspire young athletes to achieve their own goals.

A Message of Hope

Oerson’s story is ultimately one of perseverance and faith. His advice to others reflects the journey he has lived: Never give up on your dreams. Train hard, stay focused, and be strong. Don’t let anything stand in your way. Focus on the finish line, no matter the obstacles. What you put in is what you get out. Work hard – it’s the key to success. And never forget to pray, because God walks with us through every challenge.
