KOUGA – Long before he wore the uniform himself, recently promoted Kouga Local Municipality Senior Traffic Officer Emile Groenewald was already drawn to what it represented – discipline, pride, and service.

Growing up in Arcadia, Humansdorp, his earliest inspiration came from the crisp, immaculate presence of a traffic officer who left a lasting impression on him. That officer was his friend’s father, Traffic Superintendent Sean Williams.

“Oom Sean was the first traffic officer I ever saw,” Groenewald recalls. “He was as neat as a pin in his uniform. I admired that.”

A Journey of Detours and Determination

Though inspired early on, Groenewald’s path was not without its turns. After matric, he initially hoped to follow in his parents' footsteps, both teachers. When he could not complete his studies, he entered the workforce at Lubners Furniture Store.

Over seven to eight years, he steadily climbed the ranks from general assistant to credit manager and later to assistant manager – a testament to his drive and resilience.

Yet the call to serve never faded.

Answering the Call to Serve

When the opportunity to attend Traffic College presented itself, Groenewald took a bold step, funding his own studies. He returned to Kouga and began working as a traffic officer on contract from 2009 to 2012.

However, when contracts were not renewed, he faced an unexpected setback.

Rather than giving up, Groenewald adapted. He pursued roles as a traffic safety officer with companies such as Group5 and EC Traffic, continuing to build his experience and stay connected to his passion.

“I love working with people,” he says. “That position allowed me to do that while staying in the traffic space.”

Resilience Through Uncertainty

His work along the N2 between Riviersonderend and Caledon brought both growth and challenges.

During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, travel restrictions left him unable to return home.

Despite this, Groenewald remained focused on his goal.

“I continuously asked if there were no positions open in the traffic department,” he says.

That persistence would soon pay off.

A Return to Purpose

In 2021, Groenewald received the call he had long hoped for – an opportunity to return to Kouga’s traffic department. He accepted without hesitation.

Today, as a Senior Traffic Officer, he reflects on his journey with humility and gratitude.

“I have always been a servant of the people,” he says. “Being promoted to this rank is an incentive to be of even greater service to the community.”

A Message to Future Officers

For those considering a career in traffic services, Groenewald offers grounded advice: passion must lead the way.

“You cannot do the job simply because it was the last option or just for the salary. You have to truly want to do it.”

Looking Ahead

With his sights set on becoming a traffic chief one day, Groenewald continues to work diligently toward his goal. His journey – shaped by perseverance, purpose, and pride – stands as a powerful reminder that the road to success is rarely straight, but always worth travelling.
