Kouga Local Municipality hosted Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp in Humansdorp and Patensie on Friday, 18 September 2026, for engagements with farmers and local stakeholders on the challenges affecting the agricultural sector. The minister’s visit had two key areas of focus: assessing the impact of the May floods and storms on farmers in the Kouga area and engaging with farmers on the ongoing national response to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

Kouga showcases its business events potential to the SANCB

Kouga Local Municipality is strengthening its position as a competitive business-events destination following a two-day site inspection by representatives of the South African Tourism National Convention Bureau (SANCB) on 10 and 11 September 2026. The visit, facilitated by the Kouga Local Municipality Tourism Department, situated in the Finance and Economic Development Department,  formed part of ongoing efforts to position Kouga as a destination of choice for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE), while showcasing the region’s diverse venues, accommodation establishments and tourism experiences. Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said business tourism presented an important opportunity to broaden the municipality’s tourism economy and stimulate economic activity throughout the year.

New bulk water main to strengthen KwaNomzamo’s future water supply

Kouga Local Municipality is set to commence with a major bulk water infrastructure project aimed at strengthening water supply capacity in KwaNomzamo and supporting the area’s future residential growth. The KwaNomzamo Bulk Water Project involves the construction of a new water main from the Humansdorp Water Treatment Works to KwaNomzamo. The project represents a total investment of R16.7 million through the Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG). The project has been necessitated by growing demand for water in the area. The existing system, which includes a 100mm diameter main from the Humansdorp Water Treatment Works and a supplementary connection to the Churchill rising main, is approaching its capacity.

Kouga heritage sites put on the map in first-ever municipal audit

Kouga’s rich and diverse heritage has been brought into sharper focus following the completion of the municipality’s first comprehensive heritage audit, covering all nine towns across the Kouga municipal area. The week-long initiative, conducted by the Economic Development and Tourism Section within the Economic Development and Finance Department of Kouga Local Municipality, identified and documented close to 70 heritage sites. The project received valuable support from Nelson Mandel Bay University students, who assisted the municipal team with the fieldwork and documentation of the various sites.

Kouga Local Municipality goes no-mow this September

This September, Kouga Local Municipality is giving its lawnmowers a break and giving nature a chance to shine. From colourful wildflowers and buzzing bees to fluttering butterflies and visiting birds, selected public spaces will be allowed to grow naturally as part of the municipality’s No Mow September campaign. From 1 to 30 September 2026, mowing will be temporarily suspended at selected parks, public open spaces, greenbelts and road verges. The initiative allows grass, wildflowers and indigenous vegetation to flower, produce seeds and provide valuable food and habitat for insects and other wildlife.

Kouga calls on community to plant for the future

From a single seedling to a forest of possibilities, Kouga Local Municipality is inviting its communities to put down roots for a greener, healthier and more sustainable future as part of its 2026 Arbour Month Tree Planting and Donation Campaign. Under the theme “Plant a Tree, Grow a Future”, the municipality is calling on residents, businesses, schools, community organisations, farmers and environmental groups to join the campaign during September 2026. The municipality aims to plant 500 trees across the Kouga area, comprising 250 indigenous trees to promote biodiversity, provide shade and improve green spaces, and 250 fruit trees to support food security and community food gardens.

For Martha “Baba” Rollison, every working day begins with prayer, purpose and a commitment to serving her community. A general worker and team leader at Kouga Local Municipality in Oyster Bay, Rollison has been part of the municipality for 19 years. She joined on 4 April 2007 – a moment she still describes as an answered prayer.
