NMU Environmental Health students explore Kouga

Twenty-one fourth-year Environmental Health students from Nelson Mandela University accompanied by lecturer Tshepo Phakisi spent a week in Kouga Local Municipality, taking their learning beyond the classroom and into the communities, facilities and environments where Environmental Health comes to life. From 14 to 18 September 2026, the students embarked on an educational tour designed to give them practical insight into the wide-ranging responsibilities of Environmental Health Services. Their five-day programme began at the Kouga Local Municipality Main Office in Jeffreys Bay, where they were welcomed and introduced to Municipal Health Services within the context of Kouga Local Municipality.

Parking upgrade completed at Jeffreys Bay Main Beach

Kouga Local Municipality has completed a R1.75 million infrastructure project to upgrade parking at the Jeffreys Bay Main Beach, providing a more durable, accessible and organised parking area for residents, visitors and businesses. The project, completed at a cost of R1 749 552.50, involved the supply and installation of 80mm paving in the Jeffreys Bay Central Business District (CBD). Strategically located at the Main Beach, the upgraded area provides improved parking and access to one of Jeffreys Bay’s most popular recreational and tourism precincts, as well as surrounding restaurants, shops and the Jeffreys Bay Water Park.

More than 1 500 archers to take aim in Jeffreys Bay

More than 1 000 archers from across South Africa, accompanied by their families, coaches and supporters, will descend on Jeffreys Bay this spring when Africa Genesis Archery (AGA) South Africa hosts its 2026 National Championship from 28 September to 2 October 2026. The prestigious championship will be hosted at the four-star Mentors Country Estate just outside Jeffreys Bay, with total visitor numbers expected to reach approximately 2 500 over the course of the event. The championship is being presented with the support of Kouga Local Municipality as the main sponsor, helping bring one of the country’s largest archery events to the Eastern Cape.

Municipality helps plant 100 Spekboom at Pellsrus Primary School

Kouga Local Municipality marked Arbor Day by helping create a greener learning environment at Pellsrus Primary School, where 100 Spekboom plants were planted on Friday, 11 September 2026. The initiative formed part of the municipality’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, community participation and creating cleaner, greener spaces across Kouga. Kouga Local Municipality’s Parks and Waste team worked alongside the Pellsrus Primary School Environmental Group, learners and teachers, as well as Akumila Thrive NGO, to prepare the school grounds and ensure a successful Arbor Day programme.

Diaz Road and Jeffreys Street upgrade completed

Kouga Local Municipality has completed a R1.15 million infrastructure project aimed at improving pedestrian safety, accessibility and traffic calming along Diaz Road and at the intersection of Jeffrey Street and Schelde Street. The completed project included the widening of the existing sidewalk along Diaz Road and the construction of a raised intersection at the corner of Jeffrey Street and Schelde Street. The total contract value was R1 150,000, with R896 085.55 allocated to the Diaz Road sidewalk upgrade and R253 914.45 to the construction of the raised intersection.

Minister Aucamp engaged Kouga farmers on disaster support and foot-and-mouth disease

Kouga Local Municipality hosted Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp in Humansdorp and Patensie on Friday, 18 September 2026, for engagements with farmers and local stakeholders on the challenges affecting the agricultural sector. The minister’s visit had two key areas of focus: assessing the impact of the May floods and storms on farmers in the Kouga area and engaging with farmers on the ongoing national response to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

New bulk water main to strengthen KwaNomzamo’s future water supply

Kouga Local Municipality is set to commence with a major bulk water infrastructure project aimed at strengthening water supply capacity in KwaNomzamo and supporting the area’s future residential growth. The KwaNomzamo Bulk Water Project involves the construction of a new water main from the Humansdorp Water Treatment Works to KwaNomzamo. The project represents a total investment of R16.7 million through the Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG). The project has been necessitated by growing demand for water in the area. The existing system, which includes a 100mm diameter main from the Humansdorp Water Treatment Works and a supplementary connection to the Churchill rising main, is approaching its capacity.
